I havent purchased a sportsman yet but plan to in the next week or so and have a few questions regarding the hitch wiring. Currently on my truck I have a flat receptable thats 4 prong I believe for my boat and small cargo trailer. The receptable on the sportsman that I saw was round and included electric brakes, so I will have to change out my current set up. I called UHaul and they have quoted me anywhere from $199.00 to $250.00 for installantion, parts and electric brake module. Did any of you get a better price for wiring your vehicle? One uhaul says they have to replace my current set up and use a pigtail for the current set up I have and another Uhaul tells me they will just bypass my current set up and I will have two set ups..the latter being more expensive???? Its crazy, just wondering what you all did for your wiring especially if you had to change out what you had previously. Thanks

I'd look for a local RV dealer and ask them what the cost to wire up your vehicle will be. I did my own, wired up the 7 way for the electric brakes, 12V charge, plus the stop/turn/parking lights. I'm running a plug that has both the 7 way and the 4 way, mainly because I often tow a 16 foot boat with the 4 way plug.

The biggest cost is the brake controller, they cost anywhere from $70 to $150.

Good Luck

Hi, Matt and Teaspoon

My dealer told my mechanic and 7-way installer that the 12 volt charging wire in the 7-way wasn't used by KZ Sportsmen Classic, so he did not install it.  Matt, when you received your trailer, did you find that the 12 volt battery charging wire was present and active in the trailer's 7-way cable?

Your existing 4-way is utilized to produce the needed 7-way configuration.  Like Matt your installer can provide a lone 7-way or flat-4, with 7-way.

John I didn't see a reply to your question so I checked my trailer for a charge feed and my seven pin connector does have one. By the way, if any one is interested in a good automatic isolator, with no voltage drop and circuitry for a delayed engament and manual over-ride, google newmar battery isolator. I bought mine through a marine dealer, can't remember who.

Good question, yes mine is hooked up, when attached to the truck and my truck is running I get 14.0V to the meter I installed in the 12V plug inside where the antenna booster is. When disconnected I get 13.1V off the battery and 12.8V off the converter.

I had to hook up the 12V wiring on my truck, not the trailer, as GM never ran the wiring for the 12V, brake, or reverse lights to the pigtail that I had to hook up on the 7 Way on the truck.

Sorry about that, John, you trailer may not have had the 12V charge line installed as it is an all electric model and the battery would be charged off the converter when plugged in to 110VAC.

I would have the mechaninc install it anyways, and it's easy to hook up the 12V wire on the pigtail to the 12V lines in the trailer at the junction box at the A frame of the trailer.

Will post pictures next week.

Thanks, Matt and Chuck for checking out your equipment on my behalf.

Might I be able to run hard-wiring through this line to link and power a rearview camera out the rear window of 14RK TT and monitor on the dash in the driving compartment of our Explorer?
