Has anyone used any kind of auto lifting/leveling system for their trailer? I know that the 14RB comes with some kind of stabilizer jacks … 2 are standard with another two as an option.

I suspect that they are some kind of manual scissor jack that will require me to get down on my knees … hence the problem. I have extremely bad knees and that will not happen.

While at the recent RV show in Toronto I saw an automatic lifting and leveling system that really caught my eye. Not cheap … if fact quite expensive, but if it does what it claims it would be good for me. They had it set up on a small travel trailer and had the tires off the ground. It was as solid as a rock when I entered the trailer.

The system is totally automatic and is activated with a remote control … just what I need, another remote control device.

Here is the link to the device … any thoughts on this or any other form of lifting/leveling devices would be appreciated.

PS: My 14RB Escape Spree has been ordered. The dealer called the other day to get the interior colours I wanted. I should have it in time for spring. Can’t wait to start my travelling adventures.

The link lead to an advertisement for motorhome auto leveling……perhaps, for the open road.

Thanks John … these are the same auto levelling devices for the trailer as well.  The trailer they had on display was a small 14-16 foot travel trailer.  This advertisement is obviously European but try and picture it for travel trailers.

Thanks

I also have bad knees, currently recovering from my second knee replacement 3 months ago.  We have also been camping 3 times in that time and I have managed to lower the rear jacks on my 16BH with no problem.  The handle fits right under the bumper, and you don't have to actually see the jack rod to insert it.  You can  see enough of the jack between the bumper and the trailer to line it up.

What's harder for me is trying to light the furnace.  I have a harder time trying to light the pilot without getting down where I can see it.  So DBF gets that job!

Hey Julie:

Thanks so much for the information on the stabilizer jacks. Due to the cost of the auto levelling system ($2400 CDN) I will definitely try the 4 stabilizer jacks first. So many things to learn and figure out. I sure hope the dealer provides a good and comprehensive pre-delivery demonstration for me.

They do offer a couple of free days at their local campground in the area as well, to sort out any bugs and/or concerns which should be helpful.

Hi sandersmr: Yes the 'ol knees aren't what they use to be. I figure I am not too far away from double knee replacement. Putting it off for as long as I can but it is inevitable. I'm only a few months away from receiving my trailer so I'll hopefully found out all the ins and outs.

Since I will be travelling alone most of the time I'll have to fend for myself when I comes to setting up, hence my desire to make it as easy and painless as possible.

Thanks again.

Karsty, I just don't see how the auto-leveling system would work and be of any benefit on the travel trailer's single axle.  I understand where it might be employed on a two-axle setup, though.

Note: The stabilizer jacks are employed only after travel trailer is leveled first, side-to-side and then front-to-rear.  So, the side-mounted air conditioner doesn't drip water on the inside of our trailer, I level the 14RK side-to-side and then raise the right-hand tire one inch.  This is enough to divert the a/c condensed water to the outside of the trailer.  Also, by raising right-hand tire one inch is not enough to cause future refrigerator problems.  It's important to maintain refrigerator level within 3 degrees……front to back is of lessor importance than refer's left to right levelness.

Also, after leveling and stabilizing (using 4 stabilizers / 4 wood pads), I clamp a single-axle BAL tire-clamp onto at least one, if not both tires, to keep tires from moving fore and aft……as a result, the 14RK doesn't budge.

Hey Julie: I've never been to Killarney but I know several folks that have. They say it is a spectacular place to go … and I have two friends in particular that do kayaking in the area. You'll love it. Killarney is only about 300 miles from Niagara so if you ever plan a trip you'll have to let me know … maybe we can meet and explore the area together.

Hi Karsty,

I live down the QEW in Stevensville and from your previous posts I think I recall that you purchased your trailer from Niagara Trailers in St. Davids. You mentioned that you hope to get a good demonstration of your trailer. If you did buy from Niagara Trailers, you will get a good demo of the various functions, The one problem is that the guy who does the demonstrations goes quite quickly and assumes things the customer might not know. I found that with the various trailers I've bought there I have to keep stopping him and getting him to repeat things. For example when he tells how to light the pilot for the water heater, he's finished while I'm still taking in the first point. He does know his stuff but I thought it would help you to know that you might want him to slow down. I guess he's done it thousands of times and just assumes a lot. Hope this helps. I'll be picking up my new 16BH in a couple of months.

Good luck.

Hi Garth:

Yes … I did order my trailer from Niagara Trailers. I appreciate the information. I will be ready for the gentleman when he does his demo for me. I really want to know the ins and outs of the trailer since it is my first trailer. I do have one benefit however … my brother-in-law has had a 5th wheel trailer for many years and I know he will help out if necessary.

My tailer should be in in a couple of months as well.

Thanks again.

Hi, Karsten!

I'm in the process of investigating alternates for weight distribution systems.  The Air Lift brand Ride Control air-bag system is under contention for the TV…..$250 + installation; plus, on-board air compressor, controller and gauge….another $200 + install.   About the same price of a WD, but so much easier.

Hi John:  Thanks for the information but that is not what I am looking for. I want something to lift and level the trailer when it is parked. The system you mention here only seems to be a levelling system for vehicles.

Thanks anyway …

Karsten, when I first got our TT, I considered the "BAL Light Trailer Tire Leveler" for about $70……the cat's meow for light TT leveling at the camp site.  I thought the 2,000 lb. max lift spec. was marginal, at best, when I called BAL direct to make sure of its capacity for use with our 14RK.  Someone on our forum recently said that they were using same to level their 16BH……an accident/injury waiting to happen.  I think 13FK group would be a good candidate, but not any TT larger/heavier, especially with our usual added camping gear.

Now, if someone made a similar design, but with more capacity, I'd buy that.
