Hello,

Just joined the forum as we are seriously considering the 16GH model, Sportsmen Classis or Spree Escape versionl. We have been rving for the last ten years, sold our trailer last year and are thinking about getting something small and mobile but still with some basic "luxuries". Had a chance to look ath the 16BH Escape model and we really like the floor plan. Fits our needs but I have a few questions and looking for some help here:

  1. Where is the battery compartment? Is it placed behind the propane tank or somewhere inside the trailer?
  2. The specs for NCC are only 340 lbs…do you guys find it adequate ? Two bikes inside, food, some clothes will quickly add up…
  3. I like the 14" tire on the Escape model. Can the SC model be ordered with a 14″ tire or it only comes with a 13" one ?
  4. Is the Escape model worth the $$ difference ? I don’t care about siding vs. fiberglass and the décor is quite nice in both…]

Any help will be very much appreciated.

I haven't seen the Escape version, but I have the SC model.

  1. Where is the battery compartment? Is it placed behind the propane tank or somewhere inside the trailer?  The battery sits behind the propane on the tongue.
  2. The specs for NCC are only 340 lbs…do you guys find it adequate ? Two bikes inside, food, some clothes will quickly add up…  We keep a lot of stuff in the back of the pickup, but do have the kitchen cabinets/pantry pretty full and the wardrobe has shelves added to better keep the clothes.  But things like the grill, the gas stove (we cook outside a lot), the cast iron cookware, the dogs' food and any firewood we take goes in the back of the pickup.  It just works better and is actually easier to access than under the dinette bench.
  3. I like the 14″ tire on the Escape model. Can the SC model be ordered with a 14″ tire or it only comes with a 13″ one ? I believe the SC only comes with the 13″.  A 14″ would rub in the wheel well, at least in the 2010.  The 2011 may have a bigger well.  I know that some people have flipped their axle and then gone to a larger tire.  We haven't done the flip yet because the factory rep told us it would void the warranty.  Our warranty expires this spring so that may soon not be an issue.
  4. Is the Escape model worth the $$ difference ? I don’t care about siding vs. fiberglass and the décor is quite nice in both…]  I guess that's up to you.  Personally, I would have liked a larger a/c, and if you can get the 14″ wheels, it may not bottom out as often (I think it's actually the base of our jack that drags on inclines or in and out of drives.  But I also haven't personally seen the Escape.  I don't know that I would like all the paneling though.

Oh I should also say that we took half the top bunk out of our 16BH.  We weren't going to use it and it made the bottom bunk that much more useable to remove the top bunk.  We did leave it in the alcove beside the bathroom to make more storage space and that's where I store bulky stuff like blankets and bedding.

Pictures can be found in the Mods section.

Thank you sandersmr, appreciate your help. I guess we could split the load in a similar way. For now, we would need both bunks but it is a neat idea for a mod – checked the pixs.

What penalty on the mileage while towing should I expect ? The frontal area is not very aerodynamic but the weight of the trailer is low so 'i would expect no more than 60% ?

We purchased our 16 BH in the early spring of 2010.  Have camped in it quite a bit locally as well as several long trips.

1. We tow with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee.  It has an in-line 6 cylinder engine.  We usually get around 20 mpg not towing.  When we tow, we average between 12 and 13.5 mpg.  I also tow not using overdrive and keep the speed around 55 mph.  We are more than pleased with how it tows going down the road.  We did get a weight distribution hitch as well as anti-sway tho.

2. We also put our heavier items in the back of the jeep.  There are just the two of us, so we put the bacik seat down for more storage area.

3. bought a small step stool to access the top bunk.  Also bought good foam mattress toppers for the bunks.  Very comfortable.

4. A/C was more than adequate for us last summer.

5. We did flip our axles.  Had no derogratory effects on towing.  It was very good for emptying our tanks tho.  We did keep our 14″ tires.  They worked just fine for us.

6. The price just cannot be beat for what you get in these units.  You will find that after you get the unit, that you will "tweak" it a bit from time to time to make it 'yours', so to speak.  If you look throughout the forum, you will get some great ideas from what others have done.

Do not hesitate to get this unit if you feel that the floor plan suits you.  KZ has done a good job of putting together a very basic unit with all the things we want.
