When I purchased my 14RK the dealer gave me some TST ORANGE power throw ins for my toilet. My black tank is only 5 gallons and each throw in pouch of TST ORANGE is suppose to treat 40 gallons. Well this weekend after camping when I went to dump my tank I noticed toilet paper and waste were not broken down. Previously when I had used a port potti I was using an blue liquid that always dissolved any material although the smell wasnt as pleasant as one would like..almost a chemical toilet super pinesol smell..but it worked good. So now I would like to get some reccommendations on what you are using that your satisfied with. Im not sure if you have to give up pleasant smell for effectiveness but I would like to have both if possible. Thanks

Hey Kim,

I use a product called Refresh. Mix in 4oz with a gallon or so of water & put in the black tank. It may be the same blue product you mentioned. It has a strong chemical odor that is only noticable when the toilet is flushed.

The maintenance guy at the RV dealer told me that it has formaldehyde & many dealers/park owners frown upon it.  Most other products have a formaldehyde-free formula that has bacteria or enzymes to break down the waste. He told me on our walk-through that he was a full time RVer & he did not  recommend anything except the blue chemical. His reasoning was that the bacteria formulas needed a lot of time to work effectively & most campers only get used for weekend trips. He also said that the small tanks on the KZ would not allow one the luxury of time, ie. you would have to dump the tank before the bacteria had a chance to work.

Hope this helps,

Matthew

Edit to say that I have never been to a park that has mentioned anything about it so I am not sure about this statement.  —-  "many dealers/park owners frown upon it"

I've been using the TST green and using about 4 ounces to a tank. The method I use is pour 1/2 gallon of water in the toilet, then add the 4 ounces, then flush.

I also do the ice cube thing, dumping 10 pounds of ice cubes in the tank after the last dump at the campground before leaving, and when driving the ice tends to agitate the tank walls and anything stuck will usually get broken free. When I get home or at the end of the day, I add 4 more ounces of treatment to the ice water and let it sit for a couple days, then run it down to the local dump station, and drain off everything. never had a problem with a tank in over 20 years by doing this. Just make sure the tank isn't full of water when it's down below freezing, or you could bust a tank fitting or tank valve.
