Greetings Members:

I am the proud new owner of a KZ16 and I have a problem that is driving me crazy. There was no battery included with by trailer, so I currently have an older vehicle battery in there just to get things up and running.

I hooked the battery up with the two available leads, Red & Black then went and checked things in the trailer, no lights, but I did notice there was a red light beside a 20 Amp fuse for the reverse polarity overload. According to the sticker on the panel that should likely be a 30 Amp.

I head over to the store, pick up a few fuses for spares, 15′s 20′s & a 30. I go to install the 20 into the battery overload, but I get a spark immediately. I pulled it away in time that it didn't blow. What the heck is going on I thought. So I go and remove one of the leads off the battery. Install the fuse, hook up the battery lead, only to have a spark on the terminal. Guess what? Blown fuse again. All breakers are turned off as well by the way. I then disconnect the other battery lead this time and install a 30 Amp fuse, hook up the battery lead, blown again.

What is the deal with the battery hookup? I have looked in manual for the trailer and the circuit break with no information on hooking up the battery or how to replace the fuses.

Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Avro … I am no expert. In fact to the contrary. But from what I have read and seen on this site I'm not sure that a car battery is the proper type of battery. I think it has to be a RV/Marine style battery. It is referred to a a "deep cycle" battery.

I'm surprised that your dealer wouldn't have included a battery in your unit. I l know that a number of the trailer features and safety features requires it have a 12V source.

Welcome to the site … I'm sure that someone with more knowledge on the subject with chime in after the US holiday.

OK, the mystery is solved. The fuse is for incorrect polarity. So I reversed the wires and I am now good to go. I suspect the sticker on the trailer saying to hook black to negative, white to positive means that the wiring inside the trailer is just that. BUT… from the junction box mounted on the trailer wall near the battery has a Black & Red wire setup to connect to the battery just like any other automotive situation. I feel better. As for no battery coming with the trailer… I bought it used. I will be getting a proper RV battery as well, I was just using this spare car battery to make sure everything was working and now it is.

Edit:  Deleted duplicate of Karsty's post which somehow got attached here. :)John
