Like many others, I didn't like how tight the squeeze was to get into the far banquette bench next to the cabinet.  Others had cut some off the table.  I  got the bright idea to try and keep my existing table intact in case I decided to sell the unit someday, so we built a new table out of MDF.  (Unfortunately, I still managed to rip the clips out of the back of the existing table at the very end of the project.

The table is six inches shorter than the original, so we have a 6 inch wide piece of MDF that we use when making the bed.  We had to make some cleats out of MDF to extend to the end of the benches, which actually makes everything more stable with the table in the down position.  Anyone who has accidentally sat where the angle cut is knows what I'm talking about.

The table top is painted with Rustoleum latex paint – it's a little more blue gray than we originally wanted, but I'm thinking about sealing it with polyurethane, which will warm the color a little.

great mod, I have trouble getting in and out of the table also.  Looks like this would help with both sides!!  Since I did my sofa to bed mod I now leave my table up all the time.  I gotta do your mod ASAP.
