Went ahead this weekend and ordered a barker 15 gallon portable waste/water tank from jcwhitney since they are having a big 20 % off sale on them plus free shipping anything over 65 dollars. When I went on my maiden camping voyage I really didnt realize just how small our black waste tank was on the 14RK. The specs say 5 gallons which isnt much and after friday nite and all day saturday the tank was full, although room mate was using twice the water she needed to flush. I dont anticipate camping at too many full hook up sites but rather state parks that only furnish elect and water so I think this portable tank will come in handy.I had done alot of reading on the models/manufactures that are out there and decided on the barker vs the thetford CW sells, and thought 15 gallon would be manageble to handle dumping.

Kim, what is the difference between Thetford CW and Thetford SmartTote?  Thanks for the tip-off of the sale.

John,

I beleive the CW refers to Camping World as the Thetford is the only brand they sell. They are both good brands though . I bought the 22 gallon Barker and also got it at JCW on sale with free shipping a couple months ago. I looked at both and the Barker is at least as good a unit as the Theford and on sale it was cheaper too. Early Thetfords had parts on the coupling mount that were flimsy but they fixed that a couple years ago from what I read in other forums.  I've only had to use our Barker once so far and it works very well. Sure is easier and quicker than unhooking the 14RB mid weekend to dump the tanks. Smile

Sorry for the confusion John, CW (camping world) does only sell the thetford. I read reviews on the thetford and I didnt notice the date of the reviews but what I gathered were people were unhappy with : tank didnt empty completely, wheels were weak and needed to be replaced with pheumatic wheels, coupler fitting didnt fit well, I cant remember what else. Just read on rvnet and type in portable waste tanks in the search box, you'll get tons of reviews and opinions. What I came to understand is their are 3 manufactures of the waste/water tanks: Barker, Thetford and Tote n' Store, each one of them have different attributes, some stow the hose and attachments, some offer different sizes than the others, some have tow handles built in ect. One thing to consider is where you are going to store your tank going to and from campground, and another is how big do you want it? For me I will most likely lift it into the bed of my truck when I want to drive it down to the dump station so since liquid is roughly 8 lbs per gallon that is something I had to consider even though I will have two people lifting it I still will dump it when its half full at 7 or so gallons. For larger tanks hooking it to your tow vehicle would make sense , so the wheel factor would be important. Some of the larger tanks also have bobbers in them that tell you when the tank is nearing full capacity. Let us know what you decide.

Kim, I'm considering purchasing the same tank you purchased. My waste tank outlet is not very high off the ground, about 8 inches.  The dimensions I found online states the hight is 11.25 inches. Did you run into and problems during transfer to the portable tank?

Well Chuck I havent used it yet. I just figure I will have to find a downhill spot to place the tank so I have good drainage. Just one more thing to scout out when picking out the perfect campspot Laugh

I have such a tank and a bracket that attaches to the back of our 16BH.  It works well and travels well.  But as Kim said, KZ just made our sewer connections too close to the ground.  Yes, if possible, scout out where there is a down-hill from where your sewer/grey water connections are.  Otherwhise it is a juggling act getting those fluids transferred.

For full hook-up campgrounds and also when dumping at dump stations, there is no problem.

We have contacted our dealer regarding the height descrepency between the discharge area of the 16BH and the portable tanks.  He understands the delima.  Will research it and get back to me. He feels that we can solve it.  I will keep you up to date.

I ordered the Barker low profile 15 gallon storage tank. I would have prefered to spend less but I don't always have a choice of campspots. This weekend we watched for an opening via a cancelation at several booked up campgrounds in our area and got a site.

Ordered Thetford Smart Tote 18 (18 gallon, 2-wheel), whose slinky hose emerges from the botton of the wheel-end, angling up to black / gray tank outlet of our 14RK…..hope we're not disappointed, as Thetford tanks have had quality issues in the past.  I'll provide a critique, here, soon after it arrives.

That Barker 15 gallon Camper Tote Along (low profile model) looks like a good bet, with height to the fill cap being 7″ off the ground.

That is the tank I ordered. The least expensive one I found was at adventure RV.net at $107.00. However I order one from Markariosrv.com @ $110.00 because they had several other items I wanted and the were shipping from the Midwest as oppose to the east coast.

I received the Thetford Smart Tote 18 gallon (icky gray color)…..looks like it's going to work just fine.

The other one that looks like will work well is the Barker pictured, above.  I sure am attracted to that nice blue color.

Hi sportsmen,

I made a rack for my waste tank. I used angle stock for the horizontal and vertical portions and flat bar to make the u straps that go around the bumper. I cut the vertical portion angle stock where it goes over the bumpr and bent it over, that rests against the bumper to keep things horizontal. I welded the uprights but they could be bolted together.

I hope this is useful.

Thanks for the pics Chuck, that looks fairly easy.  We got a 30 gal Barker tote from my

parents (they are seasonal so they don't need it anymore)  At first I thought it was too big

(but the price was right: free)  After going camping for 5 days, the 30 gal capacity was

lovely!  We only had to do a dump with it once!  And both DH and I can hoist it up into the

bed of the truck (even when full) so we can drive to the dump station (I prefer this than

hooking it upto the hitch)  The only downfall was that there was no decline in terrain at our

site so we had to do the juggling thing to empty our holding tanks.  And some advice: if

you even end up having to do this, make sure someone holds the end that goes into the

tote since the juggling can loosen the cap and send dirty water flying everywhere

(thankfully it was just grey water at the time)

Ok I'm just going back to my post and it seems most of it got cut

I'm new to a lot of this so please forgive me. Is it really possible to fill up the 10 gal blackwater tank with one person in a weeks time? Do I really need to buy one of those tanks?

That's tough to answer since every person's "usage" is different :)   But, 2.5 of us (I say

this because DD is only 3) filled the tank in 3 days.  We also tried to use the park toilets as

often as possible, especially for 'solid' deposits.  We use a lot of water though, to keep the

tank as fresh as possible.  So based on that, I'd say it would be quite easy even for one

person to fill the tank in a week, unless you do most of your bathroom stuff at the park

bathrooms (that is if there are some)  Just for perspective (since you can't see the black

tank size), look at your tiny fresh water tank: 10 gallons.  Not very big.  I believe the black

tank on the 16BH is only 9 gal., which is even smaller.

Steve,

I thought the same thing. After our 1st trip, I realized how wrong I was. With 2 adults & 1 child, the tank was full after 2 & 1/2 days. The grey tank was full also. Just a couple showers will fill it up.

It's just me and a beagle. Since I'm planning on full timing in this thing I was kind of hoping the 10g tank would last me at least a week.
