OK … so I’ve had the E14RB for a week now. Been camping out at Patio Beach (backyard) most of the time to check everything out and learn how everything works. Still not sure about some things but will sort those out in time.

The big thing for me is the dinette/bed. Since I will be travelling alone I am planning to leave the bed down. The major concern I have is the OEM cushions are taking a beating. I slept in the TT for five nights and even with the 4" memory foam topper on top of the cushions I noticed that the cushion are taking a severe beating.

So … what to do? I have decided to remove the table and all cushions. I am replacing the table with a piece of plywood large enough to accommodate a twin (single) mattress (39" wide). Then I will get a twin mattress and set that up. That will give me a little extra floor space as well.

I only need a single bed so I am hoping that will work for me. I am going to store the table and cushions so I can replace them if/when I decide to sell or trade.

Has anyone else did something similar?? If so how’s it working for you?

As a side note … I have booked my first camping trip. I am heading down east and have booked anywhere from 1-4 weeks at a campground along the Maine coast. From there I will branch out on a photo expedition of the surrounding area. I have always loved the rustic coast and fishing villages throughout Maine. Also there are a number of covered bridges that I want to photograph as well.

I’ll be leaving the middle of May and return sometime in June. Once I get set up and going I will post a link to my PBASE photo gallery for anyone that wishes to see some of my pictures.

Regards

Karsty…if my memory serves me right theres a member who has a 13fk on here that took out her dinette and made a single bed too..seems like the perfect idea for a single person…you can always just use a tv tray to eat on as a table. I will do some searching on here and see If i cant find the post and her modifications.

Teaspoon Cool

Well I searched, and the member who replaced her dinette table was homebodyfl , you can do a search under members for her posts..I didnt see a picture of her modifications (i didnt read all her posts)  but she mentioned she used 1 x 3 1/2 slat boards for her bed. You could always just use a futon mattress instead of a tradional one and have it made to any dimensions you want, although sheet fitting might be a problem with that idea. I use a 4″ foam mattress that is not memory foam on top of my cushions, although I think 3″ would have been adaquate. I havent noticed any "wear" to my original cushions yet. Good luck and let us know what you come up with!

Thanks Teaspoon for the information. I did find several posts by homebodyfl with pictures. She is still using her original cushions which I don't want to do. I am a heavy weight and consequently need extra support when sleeping. The cushions with topper worked alright and I slept pretty good. Just concerned about the cushions.

I will check out several mattress options but am leaning toward the twin so I can get sheets that fit etc. I like to be comfortable when sleeping. Smile I already have a folding wooden TV style tray that I can using for eating. Actually, I use it more for setting the computer on when in the trailer. I do a lot of photo editing and posting to my photo web site.

I will take and post some pictures as I get this done.

I thought about doing the same sort of thing, just haven't gotten to it yet.  Only downside I see is, it will be a little harder to get into the fresh water tank compartment for service if it is ever needed.  Not much harder, mind you, just a littleWink

When we bought bunk beds for the kids (oh so long ago, they are grown with kids themselves now) the bunks came with something they called a "boogie board" instead of box springs.  This board went over the 3 cross-slats and created a good enough foundation for the mattress.  You might want to go to a place that sells beds and see what they want for one; it can't be much more than plywood but it already will have a covering that will keep the mattress from getting snags or splinters.  Although, an old sheet could do the same thing.

The foam in our seat cushions is not a high grade foam, to be sure.  Happily the cushions are zippered, so it won't be hard to get better foam sometime and fix them up.

Hi Karsty,

Glad to hear you picked up yout trailer. I hope all went well at Niagara Trailers. I'm sure you'll love your trip to Maine. Last year my wife and I took our 14RB to Cape Cod, and like you, I take a lot of photos and do some editing along the way. I went to pick up my new 16BH today but decided not to bring it home because of those terrible winds we had – and also, they couldn't find my license plate. If you find you have some questions you can't get answered send me an email – I'm just down the road in Stevensville.  email: garthmoe@yahoo.com

Hi Mike:  I thought of that and actually thought it might me easier. At the moment I had to roll up the foam topper and then try and get the cushions out before getting to the wood over the tank area. With the single mattress I am hoping to just slid it side ways toward the bench coach enough to be able to lift the wood and have access to the tank.

I don't want to get a mattress that is too heavy … but just enough to give me some support. I'll play with it and hopefully will find the best solution.

Thanks for your thoughts though.

Congrats on the first trip plans Karsten!

You are going to LOVE taking that trip in your own new rig!  What spot(s) do you have picked out for camping?

Julie

Hey Julie:  Although I have visited Maine in the past I am not familiar with any of the campgrounds. I found one called Hilltop Campground and booked my first week there. If it works out I will stay there for the whole stay and just take day trips or even the odd overnight trip and stay at motels to the various locations.

I have spend at lot of time in the New England States including New Hampshire and Vermont. This time I just want to stay put and concentrate on some personal things as well as my photography.

I am looking forward to just getting away.

Bed is done!!!  And it is very comfortable. As I indicated, I removed the table and original cushions and replace the table with a piece of plywood and then topped it with a twin (single) mattress. The mattress is light enough that I can easily move it out of the way to get to the fresh water tank and hot water tank if necessary.

I need to find something to place next to the bed on the original dinette bench between the mattress and the refrigerator and the mattress and the coach (sofa). They are kind of like a nightstand area and are only 15 inches or so wide.

So for now the bed is permanent. I'll post a photo later for those that are interested.
