Would like to take our bikes along when we go camping: two adult bikes plus we have a child trailer that hooks on to one of the bikes for my son who's only 3 right now. We'll throw the trailer into the back of the SUV.

Don't want to mount them to the roof of the SUV, so I'm looking at either a rack that mounts to the stinger, or to the trailer bumper. For the latter, I've seen some racks listed that bolt on to the bumper and "straddle" the spare tire.

What I know:

- 2011 Spree Escape 16BH

- 2009 Kia Borrego V6. Max tongue weight is 500lbs.

What I don't know is the true weights of our setup…haven't been to a scale yet.

Which way would you go?

With taking the bike carrier, I think you need the trailer bumper.  They can hold about 500 lbs, but go lower to be on the safe side.  I would highly recommend getting your bumper re-inforced… talk to your dealer or even your local body shop.  They are not set up to hold bikes right off the line.

I will have 2 kids bike and my bike and bought the cargo trailer.  Think of all the other uses as well.  at present, I have stacked them and tried to carry around the block with my truck… it may look weird, but it is more stable.

Putting them on the bumper will help your tongue weight out a tad.

My dealer told me they thought the bumper (without modification) would stand up to a (1- or 2-)bike rack ok.  After looking it over, I am inclined to agree.  It appears to be fully welded to the frame, not spot welded, plus on both sides it has an extra piece running underneath that's welded to both the bumper and the frame.  However, if anyone has asked KZ this question and they have directly responded with a "no", I would like to hear.  Certainly the mfr would know better than anyone.

I have Thule "jaw type" bike racks on the roof of my mini van for myself and my wife's bikes. With the rear sliding doors open it is a breeze taking them on and off. It would be a pain if I had to remove the front tires and use a fork type securing system. I just picked up an over the spare bike rack off of craigslist for my 2 kids bikes. I placed the bikes on the rack this afternoon and they and the spare feel very solid. I had moved the spare over to make room for my black water tank and its carrier so it is near the frame rail.

Thanks all for the advice. We ended up getting an over-the-spare type rack, and it worked out great! Just got back from a 3-night stay at Inks Lake State Park, near Burnam, TX. That's about a 4-hour drive from where we live.
