Hello Everyone,
I stumbled across this website while researching the KZ Classics and I'm so glad to have found it.
My husband and I are considering purchasing either the 14RB or the 19SD. We used to own a 16′ Scamp, which we really liked but it was just too small for a 6′ 2″ man. The Sportsmen's Classic 19SD seems to fit the bill in terms of floor plan and price but I do like the smaller footprint of the 14RB. We haven't seen either in person because the closet dealer is a couple of hours away.

I sure do hope that some of you will weigh in on your experiences with your campers and how opinions about the various sizes and floor plans.

PS: We'll be hauling this with a 2005 Ford Escape V6 with tow package.

Looking forward to joining you all in the fun of being a KZ Sportsmen Classic Owner!

Dawn, welcome to our little corner of the world.  I would be a bit hesitant to pull the 19xx with a V6.  Donna and I are quite comfortable pulling our 14RK with our Ford Explorer 5.0 L V8, AWD.  Perhaps, Matt (Sportsman Matt) will chime in, as he has the other 19xx and experience working for an rv dealership, if I remember correctly.  Teaspoon might offer thoughts of pulling  her 14RB with a smaller pickup.  Not only is your towing capacity at question here, but also your wheel base is a bit on the short side for 19xx (IMHO/in my humble opinion).

If you multiply 80% of your tow vehicle's towing capacity, you will have created a safety margin for your vehicle.  Remember that you could very well add 500 lbs. of mods and stuff to travel trailer, prior to camping for a few days.  Go to http://www.Rv.net ……search for similar info./ask questions, etc.

Dawn Welcome to the group! I dont have any experience with the 19xx but I do own the 14RK like John does and I can tell you pulling with a 4 cylinder is not adequate. I do it but it really limits me on where I can travel because of grades. However if yoiu went with a 14 I think the v6 would work for you , not as well perhaps as a v8 but very doable.I would hesitate on pulling the 19xx but like John said please consult others like on rvnet before you make a decision.I love my 14RK, however on mine the shower/toilet combo is elevated and im 5'3″ and can stand in the shower but my head is at the vent almost, so for my roomate to shower (5'7″)  she has to sit down (but then thats why its a combo shower/toilet anyways) IMHO the best thing for you to do is check as many models as you can in person, I drove 6 hours to see models before I purchased.Theres some terrific information on the Sportsmen on this forum, esp about mods and repairs. Hopefully Sportsman Matt will give you valuble information that will help you decide before you purchase,he is our in house guru rv tech. Look forward to having you as a owner very soon!

Dawn and Kim, should probably consider adding transmission cooler to your tow vehicles, if has not already been installed.

Thank you all for such a warm greeting.  It's so nice to know this is an active forum ( I had my doubts:0).  We did the math and yep, we are really pushing it hauling the 19SB with the Ford Escape V6.  Especially since we're planning to camp out west in the mountains.  We add approximately 400 lbs to the equation and we aren't particularly big (weight wise) people!

Knowing all that and being extremely foolish people (we call it dare devils, but hey we're in our 40's), I think we're still going to go for it!  We talked with the sales guy (yes, I know, I know…) and he did express some reservations about our plans but also said it was "doable" if we were super strict about load.  I really do want to take Rick with me so we decided to leave the bikes and golf clubs at home:)  We never use them anyhow, but you never know, right?

We're also considering the stabilizer jack dohickey thing (kind of expensive) and we already have the extra transmission cooler and electric brakes.

We're going to pull the camper out to Lake Superior to camp, hike and see how it handles.  Worst case scenario is we are 5 hours from home and my mom and step-dad have to bail us out (again).  Even worst case scenario…We have to try to sell a sell our "dog" car (it's super stinky because of the big, wet dogs we haul) and get a super new, cool tow vehicle <evil grin to the unknowing but supportive husband, Rick>

Any input on that stabizler (Eqil-i-zer) thing?   I also want to get a fantastic fan installed but I'll post about that in the modifcations forum.

Thanks again for all your support and I appreciate your candid input!

Dawn, I want to carry my bike and roomates too, but I think I will have to put them in the bed of my truck because I read on rvnet I think something about KZ doesnt reccommend and says dont do a bike rack on their trailer bumpers..somethiing about it being spot welded and not a continous weld i.e. being strong enough to support a couple of bikes? if anyone could shed light on this let me know.

Kim,

We bought a bike rack that attaches to our hitch.  It worked great with our scamp (but that was much lighter).  I know Rick had to do some simple math to determine if the hitch could support the bike rack, bikes and camper.

We bought the bike rack at harbor freight.

Dawn (agonizing over whether she should buy the 19SB or not)

Dawn, I'm going to be unpopular here, but you just don't have the wheel-base to safely handle the 19SB, nor the tow capacity using your Escape V-6…..JMHO, it's a preventable accident just waiting to happen and I think a transmission burn-out in the mountains.

Dawn and Rick, for Weight Distribution Hitch recommendation contact Bob Gisi at e-trailer.com.  Bob's direct number is (636) 887 – 9346.  Bob Gisi is GURU when it comes to Reese Towing Products.  He'll put together the right mix of components to make the project turn out right.  Tell him "smilinjohn" suggested him for the right answers to your problem.  (I don't get a kick-back.)
