Hi, I registered some time ago and picked up my Spree Escape 16BH in late June.  So, I decided that I should finally introduce myself.

This forum has been very helpful and I have been learning a lot from it.

For years, I have owned a variety of tent trailers and finally decided that I needed to upgrade.  What a difference, with some of the features. The microwave and shower are at the top of our list.

Our primary use has and will be for recreation in the Colorado mountains and, in most cases will be "dry camping".  However, I just got back from a trip to Moab, UT and stayed in a RV park.  Mixed feelings on that, liked the unlimited power and water, didn't like being on top of each other.

The only disadvantage that I see with the Spree 16BH compared to a tent trailer is the incredible wind resistance.  My TV is a 2010 Toyota 4Runner with the 4.0 V6.  I got just over 12 mpg on the trip to Moab.  Except for the passes, I had enough power, but it felt like the brakes were on most of the time with all of the wind drag.

For the dry camping, I purchased a Honda 2000i generator and expect to put it to good use in November on a couple of different hunting trips.

Hello and welcome aboard!  With you all the way on the wind resistance thing.  It's the price we pay for the convenience of being able to open the door and be all set up.  Like you I'm also getting about 12mpg over the road.  When you talk to owners of bigger rigs they don't even use double-digit numbers.  I'm finding that even swallowing fuel at that rate it's still a cost-effective way to travel.

12 – I would love 12!!!  With my older truck, it's closer to 9.5 – 10.  I love my 16BH, especially since I have been making it "mine" with the mods.  I have the Sportsmen Classic version – have had it for 2 years.  Next week, it goes in for its axle flip.  You already have 14″ tires on yours, don't you?

It is all about the frontal area and not so much the length or weight.  I pay the same MPG penalty with only 14'.

And welcome from another avid dry camper.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm curious if you've considered an axle tube replacement as opposed to the standard mount flip?  It's more money than the over/under kit, but you gain 4″ of clearance under the axle tube.  I've been a couple of places this year where that additional clearance would have been welcome, specifically hilly field roads with humps and boulders in the middle.  FWIW, the tube from Dexter is about $115 + shipping + installation if you can't do it yourself.

Sandersmr, yes it came with 14″ tires.  I did notice that the 2013 model is going to 13″, however.

The axle flip sounds like a good idea from a ground clearance standpoint, if I did it, would it further aggravate the wind drag issue?
