Hi everyone. Just got the 16BH last month & was wondering about gas mileage. Most of our trips will be all interstate (mostly flat). Maybe once a year, there will be a 3 hour drive through the Ozarks, lots of 2 lane winding roads & big hills.

Towing with a full size SUV & V8 in which we normally get around 18MPG.

Thanks for the info. I will be posting pictures in the next week or so of our modifications.

We have a 14RK that we pull with our '02 6 cylinder Jeep. Without the trailer our Jeep does about 19 mpg on the highway. With the trailer we only get about 10 mpg. But that's better than we got with a 17′ Jayco that was 1000 lb more; then we only got about 8 mpg.

Plan on 10 to 14 MPG depending on how you drive.

My GMC varies between 13 and 17 MPG empty depending on how fast I drive. Same point when towing. Rapid starts and long high speed driving ammounts to low gas milage, slow starts and moderate speeds (55MPH and under) makes the gas last longer.

Carol and I just completed a trip from Spring Hill, Tn to Gulf Shores, Alabama.  Had a wonderful time at the Gulf Shores State Park Campground.  We have the 16BH and we just love it.  We tow with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 (6 cylinder).  We have a weight distribution hitch and anti away bars.  On our trip down, I tried towing in regular drive (using overdrive).  I had to switch out of it constantly with all the hills.  Our total average gas mileage on the trip down was 14.25 mpg.  On our trip back, I towed with the D3 (not using overdrive)  It was a much better drive and I hardly noticed that the "littel bit" as we call her was even back there.  Our mileage for the trip back was 13.75 mpg.  That is only .5 miles per gallon difference and a much more peaceful and enjoyable trip.  From now on, I will always tow in D3.

Carol and I spent 10 days at Gulf Shores, had a great time and so much enjoyed our experience in our Sportsmen Classic.  So glad we bought it.  Glad to see how to post pictures.  We will start doing that.

Hey everyone, we had our 1st trip this weekend. Gas mileage was not as good as we had hoped though. We went up I55 to St Louis & all but around 30 miles of a 250 mile trip was interstate On the way up, we traveled about 65-68 mph & got 11mpg (!) in overdrive. I slowed it down a bit & traveled from 60-62mph & got a 12mpg on the way home.  We normally get around 17mpg so is that to be expected or should I be getting better mileage? Thanks!

Congrats on the first trip! I havent payed attention to my gas mileage, should I ? I have seen people put wind deflectors on top of their cars, wonder if that helps.

Your actuage mileage might vary………………..

Trip out to the Canadian Border in New Hampshire netted me a solid 10.1 MPG doing 70 MPH on the highway, 45-55 MPH on the 2 lane highways, and 35 MPH on backroads for over 430 miles.

Empty I averaged 16.5 MPG driving 55 MPH on highways and 35 MPH on backroads without the trailer.

If I didn't have to drive 6 1/2 hours one way to get there I probably would have cruised along at 55 mph.

"97 Ford Explorer V-8, AWD……normal everyday driving, with cruise control, overdrive on = 20 mpg;

with 14RK + 400 lb. stuff + 500 lb. people/dog/cat in TT/TV, with cruise control, overdrive off = 930 miles @ 11.4 mpg.

I thought I'd bump this old thread back to the top.  Hopefully some more folks have mpg numbers they'd be willing to post.

I'm averaging 9-11.5 mph towing with my 2002 F150.  Normally I get 15-17.5 normal driving without towing.

We towed a popup for 11 years.  For the period 2005-2010 we towed with a 2004 GMC Safarii van and averaged 12-14mpg at 65-75mph.

We just returned from a a trip that was 640 each way and we had a range of 10-12mpg at 55-65mph.  The difference is due to the larger sail area on the 14RK.

With highway driving I usually get 11-12mpg.  On one drive with the winds blowing about 35 watched it drop to 10 mpg.  I swear I was watching the needle drop while driving.  Usually city driving about 18 mpg /21 hwy.

My Escape E14RB completed its maiden camping voyage today, a little over 400 miles.  The first fillup was 10.67 mpg but I was driving into a fierce, gusting headwing and running the AC.  The remaining fillups, under more normal conditions, were a bit over 13 mpg.  Towing with a 2008 Toyota Highlander V6 that gets 23 mpg highway without trailer.  I was driving mostly around 60 mph.

I towed the E14RB with my old V8 Merc Mountaineer about 50 miles north to the dealer to get a couple of things done.  By itself the Merc gets 18 mpg hwy.  I had a strong tailwind going north and the truck ran effortlessly in overdrive, getting 15.9 mpg @ 60 MPH, according to the onboard computer.

Coming back south I was running directly into that same wind, and the result was 8.5 mpg @ 55 MPH with the headwind… OD locked out and the truck unable to hold speed on mild hills.

Wind resistance is definitely a larger factor than trailer weight!

With wind resistance being a major factor in gas mileage, wouldn't the addition of a nose cone on the trailer imrprove that and handling issues as well?
